Flat, forgettable characters? Yeah, we’ve all been there. But here’s a cheat code: The archetypes. ✨

A hero rises to face impossible odds, a rebel challenges the system, a wise mentor offers guidance, and a lover risks everything. ⚔️ These recurring character patterns are called archetypes, and they appear in myths, fairy tales, novels, modern films and psychology. 🎭

Character archetypes are not stereotypes or rigid templates meant to limit creativity. Instead, they are narrative foundations that represent universal human experiences, emotions, and motivations. 🌱 Because these patterns are deeply rooted in storytelling traditions, readers instinctively understand them and connect to them on an emotional level. 📚

Each archetype has goals and motivations, strengths and flaws you can use to create your character, like a blueprint!

Today, I am showing you the 12 archetypes by Carl Gustav Jung.

How to use the archetypes ✍️

• When I create my own characters, I give them each one zodiac sign (look up my blog post on the zodiac sign method or my videos for more infos on that) and one archetype. Both zodiac signs and archetypes come with a lot of traits, strengths and weaknesses so your character automatically becomes multidimensional and authentic. 🔮
• Use the archetypes as starting point, not finished characters ​💡​
• You can also mix and match different archetypes or twist them: A cowardly Mentor or a Hero who doesn’t wanna save anyone …

1 The Hero 🦸‍♀️

At the core of every epic story lies the Hero. The one who grows, struggles, fails, and rises again! 🌱​ The Hero is not perfect. In fact, their flaws and mistakes make readers root for them even harder, because they reflect our own struggles. 😭 They represent transformation through the trials they are facing. ✅​

• strengths: courage, honesty, strength, discipline
• weaknesses: reckless
• goal: change through rule

2 The Sage 🧙‍♂️

Every Hero needs guidance, and that’s where the Sage as mentor steps in. ​🌟 They don’t just hand over their wisdom, they light the path the Hero must choose to follow. 🔍​ The Sage represents hope, tradition and wisdom, grounding the story in meaning. ✅​

• strengths: methodical, intelligent, wise
• weaknesses: passive, overthinks everything
• goal: fulfillment through knowledge

3 The Jester 🤹​

They are like the wildcard of every story. They are unpredictable, witty and chaotic. 🎭​ They stir trouble, break rules, and often expose truth through humor or mischief. 😱 Readers love the Jesters because they’re clever, funny and keep everyone on their toes. Jesters stop your story from being predictable. 💡

• strengths: humor, innovation
• weaknesses: careless
• goal: connection with others through joy or mischief

4 The Ruler 👑

The Ruler craves control, order and stability. 🌍 They build empires, enforce rules, and often carry the burden of leadership. 🏰 Readers are fascinated by them because they show the cost of power and loneliness at the top. ⛰️

• strengths: vision, authority, responsibility, leadership
• weaknesses: arrogance, fear of losing power, obsession with control
• goal: order through control

5 The Lover 💕

This character is the one who feels intensely, loves fiercely, and risks everything for connection and relationships. ❤️‍🔥​ The Lover is driven by the need to belong, to be chosen, seen and cherished. 🥺​ Their greatest strength is devotion, but the same devotion can become their undoing. Readers root for them because they reflect our own longing for closeness and fear of loss. 😓

• strengths: devotion, empathy, passion
• weaknesses: fear of abandonment, dependence, self-sacrifice
• goal: connection without losing themselves

6 The Outlaw / Rebel 💥​

The Outlaw is born from injustice. They see the rules, understand them and choose to break them anyway. ⚡ They challenges authority, tradition, and systems that demand obedience at the cost of freedom. 🌪️ Their conflict lies in knowing when rebellions turns into destruction. Readers are drawn to them because they act on impulses many suppress like defiance, anger, and refusal. 🔥

• strengths: independence, courage, boldness
• weaknesses: self-destruction, distrust, recklessness
• goal: freedom through resistance

7 The Caregiver 💆‍♀️​

The Caregiver exists to protect. They are the ones who stay behind, carry the burden quietly and put others first. 🌱 Their strength lies in loyalty and compassion, choosing responsibility even when it hurts. 💔 Readers recognize their conflict: The slow loss of the self when care becomes sacrifice. 😓 The Caregiver represents love that endures, even when it is unseen.

• weaknesses: self-neglect, martyrdom, suppressed needs
• goal: safety and stability for others

8 The Explorer 🔍​

The Explorer cannot remain still. ⛰️ They are driven by the need to discover, leave the familiar and seek truth beyond borders. 💥​ They represent independence and self-definition, but also the refusal to be confined. Readers connect to the Explorer because they embody the desire to escape limitation. Their conflict emerges when their freedom is threatened. ❤️‍🔥​

• strengths: curiosity, adaptability, courage
• weaknesses: restlessness, emotional distance, fear of commitment
• goal: authenticity through freedom

9 The Creator 🖼️​

This character is the one who imagines what does not yet exist and refuses to accept the world as it is. 🌟 They are driven by the need to create, build, shape and leave something meaningful behind. 🎨 Their greatest strength is vision and imagination, but that same vision can trap them in endless perfectionism. 😱​ Readers connect to them because they represent the desire to create something that outlives us. ​✨

• weaknesses: perfectionism, obsession, fear of failure, provocative
• goal: to create something meaningful without destroying themselves in the process

10 The Innocent 🧸

The Innocent is the one who believes in goodness, hope, and the possibility of a better world. 🕊️​ They are driven by the need for safety, happiness, and a life untouched by cruelty. 🌿 Their greatest strength is optimism and kindness, but that same hope can make them blind to danger and naive. Readers like them because they remind us of the part of ourselves that believe the world is good. 🌍

• weaknesses: naivety, vulnerability, denial of reality
• goal: to keep their hope alive without losing their understanding of the real world.

11 The Magician 🎩

The Magician understand that the world can be changed and believes that transformation is possible. 🕯️ They are driven by the need to uncover hidden knowledge and reshape reality. 🔮​ Their greatest strength is wisdom and insight, but that same knowledge can isolate them from others and they are willing to take dangerous risks. 😓​Readers connect with them because they represent the possibility of change, growth, and hidden potential. 🎯

• weaknesses: manipulation, secrecy, detachment, willing to take risks
• goal: to transform the world without losing their humanity

12 The Everyman 👥​

The Everyman represents ordinary people and the quiet strength of everyday life. 🏡​ They are driven by the need to belong, to be accepted, and to find their place in the world. 🌍 Their greatest strength is empathy and humility, but that same humility can make them doubt their own worth. 🌱 Readers like them because they feel real, relatable, and deeply human. 👤
